Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring can disrupt your sleep and the sleep of those around you, often affecting energy levels and thereby the quality of your life. Snoring occurs when the airway is partially blocked by the tongue and soft tissues of the throat. Sleep Apnea occurs when the flow of air to the lungs becomes completely obstructed, sometimes causing a pause in breathing. When this happens, you may wake up gasping for air as the body is deprived of oxygen.

Chronic snoring or Sleep Apnea can cause serious and possibly life threatening complications, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmia, diabetes, stroke and acid reflux.

The negative side effects of these conditions are drowsiness, restless sleep, irritability, headaches, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, depression and high blood pressure. In severe cases, the continuous lack of oxygen puts a strain on the heart, which can lead to a heart attack.

Treatments

Lifestyle changes, surgery, or a CPAP machine are some of the options that are available; however surgery is often painful and engrained habits are hard to break.

We can offer an in-depth consultation, outlining the risks and success rates of the above options as well as the option of a customized oral appliance to wear while sleeping. The sleep guard works by moving the lower jaw forward into a position that opens up the airway to help prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues of the throat, allowing more air to pass through. They are comfortable, effective and have a 90% success rate.

Whether you are a long-standing client or a new patient, Dr. Hussein and our friendly team welcome you.
